Five facts about the Polynesian language

  • There is no one Polynesian language, but rather it is a family of very similar languages spoken throughout the breadth of the Pacific Ocean.
  • There are around 40 separate Polynesian languages, although many are very similar to each other, and it is possible for people as widely separated as New Zealand and Tahiti to understand each other’s languages to a certain degree.
  • The most important Polynesian languages in terms of the numbers of speakers are Tahitian, Hawai’ian, Tongan, Samoan and Māori.
  • All Polynesian languages are part of a wider group of languages known as the Austronesian group which are spoken from the eastern Pacific to South-East Asia.
  • It is thought that the various Polynesian languages developed from an ancestral language in South-East Asia, and diversified as people migreated into and around the widely scattered Pacific islands.
