Five facts about the Kyrgyz language

  • Kyrgyz is a Turkic language, spoken by four million people in Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, China, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Tajikistan, Russia, Uzbekistan and Pakistan.
  • Kyrgyz is part of the Kazakh-Nogai group of Kypchak languages, and today Kyrgyz and Kazakh can be mutually understood.
  • Kyrgyz was first written in the Turkic runes, which were slowly replaced by the Arabic alphabet.
  • In 1940, Soviet policy implemented a Cyrillic alphabet which is now commonly used, but some Kyrgyz still make use of the Arabic alphabet.
  • In 1991, after the Soviet Union collapsed and Kyrgyzstan became independent, the Kyrgyz people wanted to implement the Latin alphabet, but this has not happened yet.
