Five facts about the Swahili language
Swahili is more correctly known as “Kiswahili”, and is a major language spoken in Eastern Africa.
The language was originally the native language of a small tribe living on the coast of present-day Tanzania, but adopted for use during and after the early slave trade as a lingua franca.
The language is the offical language of Tanzania and Kenya, but is widely spoken in neighbouring countries, such as Malawi, Uganda, Congo, Rwanda and Burundi.
The language is derived from the original Bantu language, but has been substantially modified, especially in terms of vocabulary, by Portuguese, Arabic and English.
One Swahili word which has been adopted into the English language is “safari’, which means a journey or travel in that language.
