Five facts about the Twi language

  • Twi is also known as Akan or Fante, and is a major language spoken in parts of West Africa.
  • Twi is one of three major dialects of the same language.
  • The language is spoken mostly in the Southern half of the West-African nation of Ghana, and is the main language spoken around the capital, Accra.
  • Because of the need to standardise the different dialects of Twi/Akan, a commitee was set up in the 1970s, and a common orthography devised to be used throughout Ghana, where the language was most used.
  • The language was brought to parts of South America and the Caribbean with the slave trade, where some words are still used, or have become part of the Creole languages that have evolved there.
