Five facts about the Jola language
The Jola language is spoken by the Jola people who live on the Atlantic coast of Africa, between Guinea-Bissau and Senegal.
The Jola people share with the Serer speakers the distinction of being the original inhabitants of the Senegambia region of West Africa.
Jola is also spelled Diola, but the language is completely different from the similarly-spelt Diaoula language of Gambia, Niger and Burkina Faso.
There are around 500,000 speakers of the various dialects of Jola spread amongst the three countries already mentioned.
Jola speakers may also speak a form of Creole as well as the old colonial language of French or English.
The Migration Translators are a leading provider of migration-related services by NAATI translators. Our team comprises not only Jola NAATI Translators, but professionals in most other world languages as well.
